The size (of your future futon) counts!

To get a good night's sleep, it's important to be picky. This means not only the type of mattress, but also its size. If you're sleeping with your partner, who obviously takes up a lot of space, forget about small dimensions and go for a Queen size or even a King size. Sleeping alone? A single bed, or even better, a 2-person bed with classic dimensions (140 x 190 or 200 cm) for greater comfort, will be perfect.

With futons, thickness is particularly important, as the bed is normally placed on the floor. Futons come in different thicknesses, so you'll need to buy the model that's right for you. Are you very light? You can choose a thin mattress (6 or 12 cm). If you're more imposing, futons with a thickness of 15 or even better 18 cm are made for you.

And what else? Other important criteria

Knowing the composition of the mattress is also vital. There's a huge choice: cotton, coir, latex, double latex, foam, bamboo skin... The traditional model is made of cotton (ideally characteristic) and firm (or even very firm). For those who want a little more suppleness, futons with a latex or coconut layer are recommended. You can also play with thickness. An 18 cm model will be softer than a 6 cm one. If you want a firm mattress, a 12 cm cotton futon is ideal.

Do you like firm but still want comfort? Turn to a model combining cotton and coir, or an all-coir model.

As you may have noticed when looking for a futon, there are also tatami mats, futon allies. But why add this thin layer to your bed? Generally composed of compressed rice straw and a rush mat, tatami is placed between the mattress and the floor. It provides excellent ventilation and protects the mattress from wear and tear. It can also add firmness.

You can also place your mattress on a wooden frame.

Your choice should also take aesthetics into account. A comfortable futon isn't everything. It also has to look good. You have a choice of colors: black, navy, ecru or white... Purists will opt for a white or ecru model. For a designer bedroom, black is a very good choice. To add a little originality, you can also choose a colored mattress. A pretty navy mattress will look divine in a light room with blue elements.

You can also opt for a buckle-up futon. This is simply a folding mattress. Folded, it forms a seat, unfolded, a bed. It's ideal for a teenager's bedroom or a spare bedroom. It's the perfect bed to invite a friend to sleep on.
